Lost Cap and Goggles
A new black Speedo silicone cap and googles were lost lost in the boys locker room after the 200 Free relay at last weekends home meet.  We are asking each swimmer  to please check their swim bags to see if they might have mistakenly picked them up by accident. If found, please give them to any of the coaches the next time you practice. Thank you very much.

To All Muscatine Swim Club Members,

Well, another meet under our belts.  Whew!!!!  The biggest and best are yet to come!

I wanted to give a BIG THANKS to everyone that volunteered their time to work the meet.  Everyone did an awesome job and next time you will know even more so it will come even easier.

Another KUDOS to the team members that donated for the concessions and to the girls that totally pitched and ran it today!!!!  We are very grateful!!!!!

We should all be proud of ourselves today.  The meet went good still a couple of timing issues (one was my inexperience and the other was the computer burped), concessions sold well (very little leftover food) and I had another team coach come over and give us two thumbs up on how smoothly the meet ran.  A successful day!!!

If you have any ideas or suggestions do not hestitate to let us know.

My sincere thank you to everyone that volunteered, donated and supported the Muscatine Swim Club.

Change in email address for Coach Bob

I am starting a new position on Monday with a new company and will no-longer have access to my past work email account. Please send any future email to my home email - calegan@machlink.com or to my yahoo email - trebornagelac@yahoo.com (my name spelled backwards for those of you wondering). I will continue to try and send out updates as often as possible and try to keep the website up to date as timely as possible as well.

Congratulations to the Varsity and Junior Varsity boys swim teams

It has been a crazy week for both the Varsity and Junior Varsity. The JV team swam the Davenport North invite on Tuesday and came away with a huge margin of victory vs the competition. I was able to see why last night in Bettendorf when both the Varsity and JV teams took to the pool. I can honestly not remember such a performance. Muscatine scored 120+ points on both the Varsity and JV compared to Bettendorf's varsity score of 40+ points and the JV's 20+ points. Our first opportunity to see the boys at home will be on December 17th vs Davenport West. We need to support Judd's squad and pack the bleachers. Most of the swimmers on the squad have been a part of the Muscatine Swim Club (many still are). It is an opportunity to see what potential each of you can have when you get to that level...

Reminder

We need the volunteer's to help setup for the meet tonight (and take down after the meet tomorrow). We are a parent run organization - parents... we need you!

Sunday

There is an Officials Clinic being held on Sunday, December 6 in Cedar Rapids. Level 1 training begins at 8 and Level 2 training begins at 1. If you have not yet attended a certification class, this is the perfect opportunity to learn more about what your swimmers are doing and the first step towards helping your team remain eligible to host a meet. If we do not have officials - we can not host a meet. Please contact Joni Jackson for directions (563-260-1248)

YMCA - Home meet entries due:

I hope all of you have enjoyed your Holiday weekend! We are fast approaching our second home YMCA meet (Saturday, December 5, 2009). If you are planning on swimming in this meet, you need to either sign-up for the meet at Monday's practice or contact your coach ASAP. Please keep in mind that we need to get all of the entries to the meet entry volunteers by the end of practices Monday night. This will give them the time needed to set the meet up properly - There will not be any late entries accepted!

USA - Irving B Weber (ICE) meet entries due:

The ICE- Irving B Weber meet is scheduled for December 12 &13 in Iowa City. This is the same weekend as the YMCA away meet in Fairfield. Happy Thanksgiving Swim Club Members:

I want to introduce myself, I am Hope Goss.  I have 2 girls, Hallie 15 and Erin 10, in the Muscatine Swim Club.  This is our third year swimming with the club.  I volunteered the first two years as just a regular worker.  This is my first year volunteering to be a member of the Board.  I volunteered to do the timing of the home meets which is a completely new experience for me.  I have never even timed a meet with a stop watch...boy, was I nervous!  I know I made mistakes but I had the members that are stepping down to help me and of course we had volunteers timing at poolside.  No catastrophes that could not be fixed.

So, I want to ask for every member's help.  First, we are having a concessions stand for the next home meet, Saturday, December 5th.  Since the meet will be a little longer than our first we would like to try something different.  We would like to have the members donate at least one item for the concession stand.  Remember this will be a limited concession stand so donations of bottled water (cases), baked goods, fruit, string cheese, trail mix, puppy chow, gatorade (medium size), napkins and we will have Pizza Ranch deliver individual slices of pizza.  I will put up a sign-up sheet at the Y and MHS for the concession donations.

Second, the swim club desperately needs volunteers!  I do not know the exact number of people we need to run a meet but I do know that the swim club has 84 swimmers signed up for the 2009-2010 season and if just one parent volunteers for a meet we should have plenty of help.  Once again, I do not know how we will split the events up for the December 5th meet but normally the day of the meet is split in half (a morning and an afternoon session) so a parent member volunteers for half of the day's events (3-4 hours;morning or afternoon).  There is also set-up on Friday night and clean-up when we are finished on Saturday afternoon so if you are unable to make the actual meet we definitely can still use your help.  I just want you to know the volunteer positions are straight forward in their duties and easy.  Here are a few examples, we have clerk of course which lines up all the swimmers for their heats outside the pool office, a clerk of course announcer which calls the swimmers for their heats (I liked this one the best because you can use a bull horn and be funny), a swimmer escort which takes the swimmers from the pool office to the bench in the pool area to await their heat (making sure they stay in lane order), a time runner which makes sure the swimmers are where they are suppose to be and collects the time cards from the timers and takes them to the timing platform, selling programs, and working concessions.  I have volunteered for four of these positions and had a fun time (the bull horn was the best!).  Oh, if you have a concern about seeing your child swim do not worry there is always someone to cover for you or if you are working in the pool you are right there to watch.  Please sign-up.....there will be sheets at the Y and MHS.

The Muscatine Swim Club is a parent run/parent volunteer organization and it is a excellent organization.  Did you know the Muscatine Swim Club has been in existence for over 30 years?  Did you know the Muscatine Swim Club builds swimmers that go on to have successful high school, USA and Olympic careers?  In the words of Uncle Sam, "WE NEED YOU!"

Please help your swimmer.

Thanks,

Hope Goss

Pentathlon Meet

We will hold our first meet next Saturday, November 21 at Muscatine High School.  This is an excellent opportunity to get in the water and see that the hard work at practice pay off.  The deadline to sign up to participate in this meet is Monday, November 16, so please see your coach ASAP if you have not already signed up.  Warm ups will begin at 8:00 am and the meet will start at 9:00.

Every swimmer will be swimming a 50 yard event for each stroke and then a 100 IM. This will give you and the Coaches an opportunity to see where you are at and to serve as a foundation to build upon. If there is a conflict with being able to participate in the meet - you must notify coach Bob ASAP!

For those of you that are registered to swim in USA swim meets and would like to swim in the Q- meet in Cedar Rapids next weekend, please review the meet packet and let Coach Bob know by Sunday afternoon (please text or call 563-288-3491). Wednesday, November 11, 2009

We have just been notified that the high school pool is temporarily closed. It could be a couple of days before we can practice there. We are going to cancel both evening practices that would normally have been scheduled at the high school. The 8 and Unders are still meeting at the YMCA. Please check the website on a regular basis for updates and practice times... The 13 and over group will try to practice at the YMCA at 7:00 pm on Thursday if the high school is not yet open... - Coach Bob

Friday, October 30, 2009

Friday, October 30, 2009

Tonight will be the last pre-season practice for the 4:00 pm group at the YMCA. Beginning Monday you will be joining your newly assigned practice times (posted in yesterday's newsletter - below). The 6:30 group at the High School will continue to practice at their regular practice times.

New season - New opportunities:

Each of the coaches look forward to the new season and hope that you do as well. If you are new to the club - Welcome! If you have swam with us in years past - Welcome back!

Coach Mike Maher will be focusing on our youngest swimmers (8 and unders)- helping them to get used to the drills and technique that they will need to become confident - successful swimmers. Coach Mike has coached all levels of swimmers in the past and has competed on the collegiate level. We think this year with the 8 and unders promises to be one of his most challenging seasons ever - Good luck Coach Mike!

Coach David Moeller, Coach Hank Mann and Coach Rita Mann will be working with the 9-12 yr olds. They will be building on the foundation that these swimmers have developed over the past couple of years. Once the basic skills have been reviewed and mastered, they will begin working on transitioning the swimmers to increased conditioning. Aside from club swimming, Coach Dave will also be working with the Middle School swimmers. Dave has been with the club for a number of seasons and has one of the most successful Middle School programs in the state. Coach Hank and Coach Rita have dedicated most of their lives to the sport of swimming and do a great job working with the newer swimmers in the middle age group. We are excited in having both of them back again this year!

Coach Bob Calegan will be working with the older swimmers again this year. Coach Bob will also begin the season by building on a foundation of technique and drills - transitioning into competitive conditioning. Coach Bob will be working on helping the older swimmers to develop and obtain personal goals - both in and out of the water. Coach Bob was selected last January as one of three Iowa coaches to take an All-Star team to the Mid-West All Stars meet in Lawrence, KS. He was also asked to support Team Iowa by helping to coach at last summers USA-Central Zone Championships meet in Grand Forks, ND.

Each of the coaches would welcome any parent volunteers to assist with the practices. This allows the coaches the work more specifically with an individual swimmer if there is someone else that can possibly help run the time clock for the sets and to help maintain a bit of crowd control in the lanes while the coaches are talking - please consider volunteering!

Missing suit:

A practice suit was accidentally left in the girls locker room at the High School earlier this week. It is a solid black TYR tank suit (w/white letters), size 26.

The swimmer thinks she left it in a bathroom stall. I am asking that all of the High School girls and Club girls please check their bags to make sure that the suit did not accidentally wind up there. I you find the suit, please give it to Judd Anderson or Bob Calegan. Thanks!

New USA Swimming - Iowa State Record:

I would like to send a big congratulations to some special young ladies for breaking a nearly 20 year old USA Swimming- Iowa State Record in the Female 10&U 200 Medley Relay.

Erin E. Goss (10) Backstroke 38.29 (38.29)

Olivia M. Calegan (10) Breaststroke 1:14.29 (36.00)

Samantha N. Fritz (10) Butterfly 1:44.84 (30.55)

For this season, their relay team has swum the second fastest time in the Nation! Way to go girls!

One more huge highlight from the meet last weekend:

Due to an unfortunate battle with the flu, we were one swimmer short on an attempt to go after the 200 Freestyle Record on Sunday. We called on Brynna Bowman (10) to step up and fill that spot. She did awesome!

The old record was: 200 Free Relay 1:55.78 14-Jan-90 CFSC -IA North,Courts,Peterson,Martin (Omaha, NE)

Our girls came so close! they swam a fantastic 1:56.92!

Olivia M. Calegan (10) 28.78 (28.78)

Brynna Bowman (10) 1:01.22 (32.44)

Taylor D. Beadle (10) 1:29.96 (28.74)

Samantha N. Fritz (10) 1:56.92 (26.96)

Oh, and by the way... For this season, their relay team has swum the second fastest time in the Nation as well! Way to go girls!

If you are bored next Saturday and would like to see one more attempt at swimming history, our young ladies will be making another attempt at a meet in Rock Island - Good luck Girls!

Here is the meet packet and registration form for the first USA meet of the season. The meet is in Ames, IA and is a great oportunity to see where you are at time wise. Remember, you are only competeing against your own best times or establishing a time for an event that you may not have swam in the past. Please get all forms back to me before Saturday - I will be sending in our entries this weekend. PLEASE call me with any questions that you may have... Thanks!

No 4:00 pm practice this afternoon at the YMCA:

The pump is being replaced in the large pool at the YMCA and there are other lessons scheduled in the small pool. With that said, we will be unable to hold practices today.

No 6:30 pm practice tonight at MHS:

There is a home girls swim meet. This would be a great time to support the High School girls - Go Muskies!

No 6:30 pm practice Friday night at MHS:

There is a home football game at the High School and they have asked that we not use the pool that evening. I will try to get back to Muscatine by 5:15 and hold a practice at the YMCA (if the pump is fixed by then).

NEW PARENTS MEETING:

There will be an informational meeting for anyone wanting to learn more about the Muscatine Swim Club program on Monday, September 28, 2009 at 6:30 at the Muscatine YMCA. If your child is interested in swimming this season this is a good meeting to learn and ask questions about the program.

INFORMATIONAL PARENTS MEETING:

There will be a mandatory parents meeting on Monday, October 19, 2009 at 6:45 at the Muscatine YMCA. AT LEAST ONE PARENT SHOULD ATTEND THIS MEETING. This meeting is a great opportunity to ask questions, meet the coaches, and learn more about volunteering during the meets.

No 6:30 pm practice tonight at MHS.

There is a home girls swim meet. This would be a great time to support the High School girls - Go Muskies! If you want to get a few yards in at the YMCA, you can swim on your own or in a group. Please be respectful of the lifeguards and other YMCA members that are using the pool. We do have the pool from 4:00 to 5:15 pm and Haden can easily share the space for those of you that want to get in at that time.

I wanted to thank all of the parents that attended the meeting last Sunday evening.

We discussed the meet schedule, club fees, volunteerism and certifications. We also discussed defining specific tasks that need to take place in order for our team to be a success. The plan is to pair or triple people up on those tasks so that future turn-over of swimmers/parents will not affect the running of the club. We will be meeting again very soon and we ask that you please plan on attending and providing your opinions/guidance so that your club can become even better!

No practice at the High School today -

There is a home Varsity Football game tonight and they have asked that we do not hold a practice. There will still be a 4:00 practice at the YMCA and a group of the older swimmers will be swimming on their own at 5:00 pm (I will not be able to get their in time to coach).

Time to plan for the future -

If you are getting these email, you are a big part of the swimming program in Muscatine - and we thank you for your time and efforts in making our club and it's swimmers a success. For those of you that have been involved with the club for a number of years, you have seen how the turning over of a small parent board can lead to lots of confusion. Over this next season, we are potentially heading for another round of parents with older swimmers wanting to hand off some of the job duties to some of the parents of younger swimmers. There will be a meeting to discuss the future role of the parent board for the Muscatine swim club at Kevin Halstead's house on Sunday, Sept. 13 at 6:00 pm. Please plan on attending to not only help us get the planning for this year’s season underway but to also re-define how the parent board is set up and discuss what tasks the club needs to focus on (and how to better approach getting this done).

If you have (or have had) a swimmer on the team, you have a responsibility to make this program (your program) continue on and succeed for future swimmers. Please consider helping us to define what is needed to run this program and how to better spread those tasks out to more volunteers.

Kevin's address is 1701 Timberline Drive, Muscatine.

If you have any questions, please contact Bob Calegan at 563-288-3491

We are in the process of constructing a team record board.

http://www.muscatineswimclub.com/records.html

The times that we have in our database are about all that we have to pull from. We have been able to pull a few of of State records from YMCA and USA record boards. I will be going through the old team "Gray Bag" to see if I can find anything from years gone by. Not all of the data in our computer system is 100% accurate but we are trying to the best of our ability to get everything correct. If you know of a swimmer that belongs on the list... Please let me know the swimmers name, the date and location of the meet and the event and time for the swim. All records are based on the swimmers age at the beginning of the meet that they swam.

This is just a friendly reminder that we are getting back into the water today! If you are uncertain as to which practice to attend... Please read the definitions from my last email (below) or call me at 563-288-3491. Practice times and locations are listed below as well.

USA swimmers... Meet packets are starting to come in. I will need to be getting these out to you very soon. It is time to begin thinking about your goals for this season. We begin today!

High School boys Varsity and JV swimmers... This is the best time to get back into the water. Your season will begin in about 2 months. That gives you 2 months to get in and work on your weaknesses and build upon your strengths. This year promises to be one that you will never forget! Do not let it pass you by... We begin today!

YMCA swimmers... Do you remember how it felt to be in shape and competing at your best? Why not start your season the way you finished it last year. By getting in now, you will have a great opportunity to work on the little things and to get up to speed on your conditioning... so that you will be ready for that 1st meet of the season - or maybe you would like to experience some additional meets on the USA side as well... We begin today!

Oh... If you did not get the message yet... We begin Today!

Coach Bob

2009 Pre-Season Registration Form

August 28, 2009

Temperatures are getting cooler, school is back in session, trees will be turning all sorts of colors. This can only mean one thing... It is time to get back into the water!

Beginning Monday, August 31, the "Pre-season" will begin. This is a great opportunity for those that are considering swimming with the High School Boys this winter, those that would like to compete in the USA SCY swim season (which begins in September - meets start in October) and for those that want to get an early start on conditioning and stroke work for the YMCA season (which begins in November).

For those of you that swam with us during the Summer Season, we will be following a similar format - dividing practices by ability and expectation (what you, the swimmer, want to get out of the practice).

Based on pool availability, we will be holding two practices each day (Monday through Friday). P1 & P2 swimmers (defined below) will practice at the YMCA and P3 & P4 swimmers will practice at the MHS. Please keep in mind that there are no specific age requirements for the different categories. We are trying to match the swimmers ability to the designed workout/practice.

Here are the scheduled practice times:

Pre- Season (August 31 to the end of October)

Combined P1 & P2 (M-T- W- Th-F) 4:00 to 5:15 @ YMCA - Coach Haden Calegan

Combined P3 & P4 (M-T- W- Th-F) 6:30 to 8:00 (or 8:30) @ MHS - Coach Bob Calegan

Phase I (P1) - Swimmers with little or no competitive background start learning the basic techniques of the four strokes in the Stroke Development Phase.

Phase II (P2) - Once swimmers in the stroke development group have become proficient in three of the four competitive strokes, they will transition into the Phase II practices. This group has the option of practicing up to five times a week. Although stroke technique continues to be addressed, more attention is paid to endurance and speed.

Phase III (P3) – These practices are designed to push swimmers to excel competitively. This group is made up of the top swimmers below high school age. Practice is encouraged at least 4 days a week, but is not mandatory. Training is through extended yardage with attention on optimizing swimming techniques. A higher level of overall effort is stressed and monitored.

Phase IV (P4) - The expectations, workload, and intensity of the MHS High School varsity teams are very high. The Muscatine Community Y Swim Club program takes this into account when training these swimmers in the off-season. This program will prepare both the boys and girls for the upcoming year of high school swimming. We will offer 5 to 6 practices a week that will emphasize technique work and transition into workouts that will build a cardiovascular base.

Please click the link below for the 2009 Pre-season registration form.

Please bring the completed form and fees to your first practice. If you have any questions about which practice to attend, please do not hesitate to call or text me on my cell - 563-288-3491.

What a summer!

The Summer season is quickly coming to an end and I wanted to thank each of you for all of your effort this summer. You have made great improvements in both your technique and your conditioning. Those of you that chose to participate in meets this summer, have all set numerous personal bests in almost every event that you participated in. As a team, we have had 14 different swimmers brake 84 Muscatine Swim Club records - many more than once. We even had 4 young ladies break a state record in the 9-10 200 LCM freestyle relay.

It is time for STATE!

The State meet begins tomorrow (Thursday) afternoon through Sunday evening. The Muscatine Swim Club will be represented by 12 athletes swimming in 77 individual events and in two relays. This, by far, will be our best showing at a summer state meet in our clubs history. You have all worked so hard and you are ready! The taper is going well - you all seem to have a ton of extra energy! Trust what you have learned and the conditioning that you have put yourselves through. Our goal is to set a personal best in every swim at state. This weekend is truly going to be special.

Zones!

For those swimmers that achieve a "AAA" swim time (or better) in an event, you are eligible to participate in the Central Zone Championships next weekend in Grand Forks, ND. So far we have 6 swimmers that have qualified and are planning on taking the trip.

Practice -

The P1 & P2 swimmers last practice for the season was this morning. The swimmers attending the state meet have a practice this evening from 6:30 to 8:30 pm and again Thursday Morning from 9-11:00 am - both practices will be at the High School. The Zone swimmers will have practice next week at the normal time on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Thursday will be a travel day and we will practice with the rest of the Iowa swimmers in North Dakota.

T-Shirts are in!

The t-shirts are in and they look awesome! They have "Muscatine Swimming" on the front and some of the best "swimming related" quotes that we could find - on the back. We are making them available to all swimmers in Muscatine. If you ordered a shirt ahead of time, you may pick up your shirts at Carver pool at Muscatine High School on Wednesday from 7:30-8:15pm. There are still some available for purchase if you would like to purchase one ($10 each). If you would like a shirt, but can’t make it to MHS on Wednesday please let Pam Beadle know and she will find a way to get one to you.

BRRR!

For those of you that attended the Summer Sizzler (which turned out to be more like a Winter Freezer!), I would like to congratulate you on keeping your game faces on. It was truly the coldest outdoor meet that I have ever attended (and I was not even the one getting wet). It was a big meet with a lot of good competition. Overall we had some great swims. As a team we had 9 swimmers that were able to set 12 new team records (below). We now have 83 new team records for the season (many broken more than once).

New State Record!

On an extremely special note - we had four young ladies set a new State Record in the 10&U LCM 200 Freestyle Relay with a time of 2:15.02 (the old record was 2:17.69 - set by Bettendorf in 1997). Our girls destroyed the old record by over two and a half seconds!

Congratulations to Olivia Calegan (9), Victoria Roth (10), Taylor Beadle (10) and Sam Fritz (10).

July 14, 2009

Please check the web calendar - practices have been adjusted and meet sessions are posted.

BLST Meet -

I am attaching what we are swimming . This is going to be a great meet. Please get to bed early each night this week. We are working hard and your bodies need the rest! Here is the website that has the psych sheets and other info:

http://blast.usswim.net/Summer%20Sizzler%20Meet%20Information.htm

RCA Meet -

Wow, what a great weekend in Clinton at the RCA - Stars of Tomorrow Invitational! As a team we were able to break 27 different team records. For the season we are up to 77 new team records (not including the records that have been broken more than once this season). As a team overall, we placed 3rd behind PVST and BETT. More important than anything else - each of you swam your best and even though we are working very hard in the workouts, your times are continuing to fall. I can not wait until taper!

June 24, 2009

All swimmers are back at the High School tonight at 6:30 pm. I just got off of the phone with the city and we can practice each evening at 6:30 pm until further notice. The calendar on the swim club web site has been updated. Please keep in mind that this Friday we will practice from 2:30 to 4:00 pm so that the swimmers heading to the MCSC meet in Mason City can get on the road at a decent time.

I would like to welcome Jensen Watson to the P1 and P2 workouts. She is 10 years old and has been with the Swim Club during the YMCA season. She is looking forward to improving on her technique this summer. I had a chance to work with her for the first time last night and she learns very quickly... Welcome Jensen!

If you have not turned in your Swim-A-Thon packets yet, please get them in to me as soon as possible. Thanks again for all of your hard work!

Swim-A-Thon -

Parents - We are holding a quick meeting on Wednesday (6/10/09) at 6:00 pm at the YMCA in the Teen Center to discuss next Friday's Swim-A-Thon. We will be finalizing what needs to happen so this can run smoothly. I would really like one member of each swim family in attendance. This fund raiser can not succeed without everyone's help! Please plan on attending...

Parents - Unless I hear back from you - we will be taking pictures of your swimmers and placing them under the Swim-A-Thon sign to show the YMCA members who is raising money for YMCA swim equipment. We really want to recognize all of the swimmers - so please let me know if you object.

Long Course Kick Off Results -

The results are in and I must say - Everyone was fantastic! I know that I am a bit partial, but when you look at our swimmers compared to other teams, you guys looked and swam great! I must have gotten over 50+ compliments from other coaches and parents from other teams on how good your form and technique looked as a team.

RCA Stars of Tomorrow -

The meet packet is now available - Registrations are due by this Thursday (6/11/09)!!!

June fees are due -

If you have not already done so, please bring your fees for June to your next practice (please make checks payable to "Muscatine Swim Club"). Thank you!
