Click below for the practice times for next week.

Practice Times - 2007-2008

Please remember that this will be the first week of practice and practice times are subject to change. We will be evaluating numbers especially on Wednesday night. There is a possibility that the 11 & 12's and the 13 & up's practice times will need to be separated on Wednesday night, but at least for the first week of practice these two age groups will be together on Wednesday. We might also combine the Friday practices for 11 & 12's and 13 & up's once the basketball games start on Friday nights.

Also because of age group numbers there is an opportunity for a limited number of 12 year olds to swim with the 13 & up's. Please let me know if there is any interest as these requests will be handled by the board and coaches.

Please look over the practice times and try to have your swimmers dressed and on the pool deck by their designated times.

Thank-you,

Kevin Halstead

The summer season is upon us - Practice starts today! We will meet at the YMCA at 4:00 pm until 5:30 pm. We will start of with an introductory meeting in the Parlor (unless we get moved!). The coaches would like to discuss a few things about the season and begin the process of goal setting. The club has also invested in some new instructional DVD’s and will begin by going over some new drills and stroke work. Time permitting, we will then get dressed and hit the pool. If your swimmer is unable to attend the afternoon sessions for any reason, please contact one of the coaches to get an alternative workout emailed to you. We look forward to an awesome season! – Bob Calegan (Cell – 563-288-3491) YMCA (563-263-9996)

The Gov’s office has requested that the YMCA State Swimming Championships this weekend be cancelled. As soon as I know anything else as to possible rescheduling I will let you know.

Go shovel out that snow. What can I tell you at this point other than to pass the word.

February 28, 2007

Dear YMCA Aquatic Directors and Swim Coaches,

I’m sure many of you are aware that the Marshalltown area experienced a large amount of damage from the weekend ice storm. According to one Alliant Energy official damage to the power poles/lines is the worst he has seen in his 35-year history with the company. Most of Marshalltown has electricity restored including the Community Y, but there are still pockets of Marshalltown and many people in the surrounding communities without power. This situation is expected to continue through this weekend’s YMCA State Swim Meet. There are many people without power staying in our local hotels along with hundreds of utility workers that have been brought in from around the country. The situation is very serious.

PLEASE FORWARD THIS REQUEST TO ALL YMCA SWIM TEAM PARENTS:
If you have a hotel reservation in Marshalltown made for Friday, March 2nd or Saturday, March 3rd, please consider canceling your reservation immediately to allow those who need the rooms to stay through the weekend. If you can drive to Marshalltown for the meet on Saturday or Sunday or could stay in a hotel in Ames, Tama/Toledo or Newton it would really help those in need.

If you have questions about this request please feel free to contact me. Thank you.

Carol Hibbs Jason Beeghly

February 14, 2007

All,

On Monday (Feb 12) a follow-up meeting was held to continue discussing the possibility of swimming throughout the summer months and to regain a USA Swimming certification as a team. Registering our club with USA Swimming will allow our club to participate in both YMCA and USA sanctioned swimming meets.

Although there were some great questions brought up, the ISI USA Club Development representative (Kathie Eizenga) was unable to attend due to weather. She has agreed to try again to come down on Tuesday (Feb 20) at 6:30 pm in the HS Cafeteria.

In the mean time, the YMCA has agreed to work with the club and has agreed to allow the use of the YMCA pool on a limited basis (Thank you Jocelyn Paxton for you help in getting this done!!!). We have also been in contact with the Wilton pool (Thank you Sue Greenwald for making the contact there!!!) and can get limited pool time there as well. We are now going to focus on working with the City of Muscatine and the HS to try and get pool time for this summer as well. We plan to have an update for next Tuesdays meeting.

I would like to thank everyone for his or her questions and for those that have volunteered to be on the development committees. Your hard work and dedication are greatly appreciated.

Below is information regarding the South East Iowa Sectional Swim meet in Burlington, IA on Saturday, February 10, 2007. All the information in the .pdf file is extremely important. If you have any questions, please let me know ASAP.

Please ask parents and visitors to not use bills larger than $20 to pay for concession items at our sectional meet. There has recently been a string of counterfeit $50's and $100's in the area, while we know no swim parent or relative would spread them on purpose, there is no way for the concession folks to be able to tell the difference.

ATTENTION SWIMMERS:

Any 7th or 8th grade student interested in joining the Middle School Swim Team please sign up in the attendance office this week and pick up an information packet. The first practice will be Tuesday, January 30th. You need to have a physical and waiver on file in the office before you can participate.

ATTENTION PARRENTS AND SWIMMERS:

I (Bob Calegan) have recently been approached by a few coaches, swimmers and parents about the possibility of reintroducing the USA side to the Muscatine Swim Club. For those of you that are not familiar with this program, it began as an AAU system that evolved into USS and now USA (the national website is www.usaswimming.org and the Local Swimming Committee’s website is http://www.lornet.com/IowaSwim/). Although it is very similar to YMCA Swimming, there are still many differences. Many of the clubs can and do swim year-round and the competition overall is typically stronger. They are also recognized as the program that feeds the Olympic Swim Team and the program that most top swimmers will be recruited from for college. In no-way do we want to stop swimming the YMCA side, what we are trying to do as a club, is to give the opportunity for those swimmers that want to swim in a structured year-round program, the ability to do so.

So - After making an announcement at our last home swim meet, a small group of parents and coaches met Monday, January 8, 2007 – 6:30 pm at the High School to discuss a few things about a potential re-start-up of the USA side of our swim club. In no-way was there an attempt to exclude anyone. Many great questions were brought up and discussed. We also understand that there will be a learning curve (that we as a group) will need to work through. Based on these things, it was decided that there is enough interest to start making initial contacts with the City, YMCA and possibly Geneva for pool usage/availability. We are also making contacts with both the National and Local USA organizations to get us re-registered as a recognized team. If you are at all interested in learning more about the USA program and about the Muscatine Swim Club in general, we are going to start holding monthly parent meetings at the High-School cafeteria on the 2nd Monday of each month at 6:30 pm. The next meeting will be scheduled for February 12, 2007.

The University of Iowa Hawkeyes Swim Teams will be in action at the Field house in Iowa City on Friday, January 19th against Western Illinois University at 5:00 pm. There is a swim meet that on the 20th in Dubuque, but they are also in action Saturday, January 20th at 11:00 am against Ohio State with both boys and girls for those that are not going to Dubuque. The meets are free and it will give the swim club swimmers a chance to see what they can strive for. Also James Dragon from Muscatine swims for the Hawkeyes and it would be great to get a group together and give him some local support. Talk to each other and let's see if we can get some cars to go up and support the Hawkeyes! They will also recognize the Swim Club if we call ahead and ask them to!

Mark your calendars now . . .

  • WHO: Swim club outing
  • WHAT: Iowa Hawkeyes Swim Meet vs Ohio State

! ! !Fairfield Directions ! ! !
Here is a quick way to Fairfield if you are adventurous and willing to take a chance on not getting lost.
Take Hwy 61 South out of Muscatine to Grandview.
Take Hwy 92 West at Grandview to Washington.
In Washington at the north end of town there is Hwy 1 to Brighton. Turn left and you are on the right road if you go past Wal-Mart in Washington.
When you arrive in Brighton the road splits so go to the right at the gas station and you should be on Hwy 78.
Only go about 2 to 3 miles and there will be a turn to the left on a county blacktop W21.
Stay on W21 and it will take you directly into Fairfield.
Upon entering Fairfield this road turns into Pleasant Plain Rd. and then it physically turns upon entering town to the west and is called Kirkwood. Here you can continue west on Kirkwood to W. 9th street and turn left or south and go to the Roosevelt Recreation and Aquatic Center that is 1/2 block south of Hwy 34 on W.9th Street.
I have went this way in the past for work and it is quicker then going through Mt Pleasant etc. Hopefully there are no detours, but that is the way we are going.
If you are not adventurous take Hwy 92 to Hwy 218. Then take Hwy 218 south to Hwy 34 and turn right, (west) to Fairfield.

SWIM INVITATION Muscatine at Fairfield
You are cordially invited to the Fairfield swim meet on Saturday, February 4, 2006. This will be a dual meet.
The standard YMCA event list will be used and swimmers may swim up to 3 individual events and 2 relays. The 500 freestyle will probably be moved to the end of the meet. This helps facilitate better usage of the locker rooms and allows the score keepers to catch up from the relays.
Where: Roosevelt Aquatics
Directions: Highway 34 to the West 9th street light. Take 9th street ½ block south and the aquatics center will be on your right.

Warm-ups:  8:25 am for visiting teams.  Swimmers that come earlier can warm-up before that.

Scratch meeting at 8:30am behind the concession counter.

Meet:  Begins at 9:00 am.

Locker rooms are off-limits during the swim meet.  There are restrooms in the lobby that may be used.  The shallow pool is off-limits during the meet.

Looking forward to seeing all of you.

! ! ! ! VERY IMPORTANT ! ! ! ! !

We just found out the high school pool has been closed due to excessive bacteria. This is our backup plan:
Tonight - Anyone who can still attend practice - We will be practicing at the Y from 7:15 - 8:45.(9 & 10s can leave at 8:15)

Friday:
9 & 10's practice @ Y from 6 - 7
11 & up practice @ Y from 7 - 8

VERY IMPORTANT !!!! ALL SWIMSUITS MUST BE WASHED PRIOR TO PRACTICE!
IT IS POSSIBLE TO TRANSFER THE BACTERIA FROM THE HIGH SCHOOL POOL TO THE Y AND THEN WE WOULD NOT HAVE A POOL TO PRACTICE IN!!
Please encourage people to call all their friends to get the word out!
